Biography

Janice J. Chambers, PhD, SE

Rocky Mountain District Councillor

Member No: 69788, initiated in 1978 at the University of Missouri. Janice J. Chambers is an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Utah. In 1978 she was initiated into Chi Epsilon at the University of Missouri, Columbia where she graduated summa cum laude. During her undergraduate studies she interned with the City of Columbia, Missouri. Prior to attending graduate school, Dr. Chambers was a practicing engineer in Southern California for five years -- employed as a program analyst with McDonnell Dougles (now Boeing) and a structural engineer with Fluor Daniel. She is a registered professional engineer in California and Utah and a certified structural engineer in Utah. Dr. Chambers received both her MS and PhD degrees in civil engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She joined the civil engineering faculty at the University of Utah in 1989. She focuses her research on steel connections and assisted the development of moment-resistant steel connections for buildings located in areas of high seismicity, which now exist in thousands of buildings throughout the world. She has been the recipient of several US-NSF grants, the most prestigious being its National Young Investigator award. Dr. Chambers teaches structural analysis and design courses. She received an Associated Students of the University of Utah Student Choice Teaching Award and Chi Epsilon's Rocky Mountain District Excellence in Teaching Award, and was recognized as the Engineering Educator of the Year by the Structural Engineers Association of Utah.
